About my town, Belgharia
Belgharia is located in the Northern suburbs of Kolkata in the district of North 24 Parganas. A long back this region was filled with several Bel trees (A kind of fruit)(Aegle marmelos) . These Bel fruits were unusually larger than their counterparts in other regions which made this region famous in those days. Holes or cavities in the trunks of the trees were made by the local people here which exposed their SAP part. These holes were known as "Belgode". This region was called Belgode because of this reason. Later because of external influence and colloquial use; the term was converted to Belgharia. This region was one of the biggest trade centers for Jute and vegetables during the colonial rule. Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa also visited this place Eight times starting from 1875.
