Origin of Bengali Year (Bangabda)
A Bengali day is counted when the sun rises just like several other common calendar systems. Just like Gregorian year; Bengali year has also been divided into 12 months.
The months are named as follows: 1)Bôishakh 2)Jyôishţhô 3)Ashaŗh 4)Shrabôn 5)Bhadrô 6)Ashshin 7)
Kartik 8)Ôgrôhayôn 9)Poush 10)Magh 11) Falgun 12)Chôitrô |
These months were determined by the position of the sun with respect to the constellations. Around c-550 an Astronomer named Varahamihir had written a book(Granth) named Panchasidhantika(five parts) helped in constructing the whole system of month detection. According to findings it is said that King Shashanka who is responsible for the unification of Bengal had begun the Bengali Calendar. The beginning is said to align with the year 594 ,20th March Saturday. But findings have also claimed to have found the term (Bangabda) in two Shiva temples in the 7th century. |
